BARNHOUSE POTS
Barnhouse Pots is an small owner operated business run by me, JoAnne Sutkin. I make functional pots that are atmospherically fired in gas or wood, sometimes including the introduction of salt or soda (sodium bicarbonate) towards the end of the process. I am interested in the effects of fire on form. Many of my pots are unglazed, which allows the fire to interact with the elements of the different clay bodies I use, which in turn reveals the story of each unique piece. My pots are also often coated with the natural ash from a wood fire, which creates a beautiful earthy coloring, texture and feel. Another line of my work, the soda fired pieces, focuses on more brightly colored pots, including bowls, cups and other vessels. The soda fired work includes strong blues, greens and reds.
